Why I am not actively playing video games

I get a specific question a lot lately and feel like I am long overdue a discussion about it. The question: “Are you playing any (video) games right now?” The brief answer as you could have guessed by reading the title is, No.

This might come as a shock because for years a vast portion of my identity has revolved around video games. I love to be immersed in a world, fall in love with it’s story while meeting and getting to know people from all around the world. I love to see the art, skill and design others put into games and understand how they work. I have even worked professionally as a broadcaster on twitch as well as in the games industry. However that has changed in the last year.

My main character Crazmadsci from the Elder Scrolls Online

Due to the events of the world of 2020 of which I don’t need to list. Every single person has felt an extra level of stress, confusion and uncertainty for the future. No matter how hard anyone tries that stress inevitably leaks into the things they do to have fun and relax… video games. Over the course of 2020 the activity I spent to decompress from my day started to become the most stressful part of my day.

It became obvious that people used their anonymity to take out frustrations on others, vent, or complain how the developers don’t care enough to fix it. As I experienced raid groups disbanding, guilds crumbling and increased arguments. It became obvious that my oasis of peace became an added source of anxiety. Something had to change.

As a result crazmadsci.com was born. I have always loved tabletop games and especially the creation portion of the hobby. Almost as long as I have played video games I’ve loved models.
So instead of playing online in a world that constantly reminded me of stress and anxiety I’ve learned to unplug from it all and spend time in self reflection and 3d print and paint models, figures and terrain for tabletop games. Instead of being frustrated about things I cannot change I create and build for a future where I can sit around the table again and immerse myself in a world with others. I focus on what I can change… My skill in the hobby.

Also a portion of me, almost as strong as my passion for all things games has also been to teach. I love to share what I know, inspire others from my enthusiasm, and document my personal growth and discovery. This site is to attempt to capture all the things I love: games, creation, and teaching.

Am I saying that I’ll never return to games? Oh absolutely not. I am strictly taking more time removed from the mouse and keyboard and instead picked up a paint brush more frequently.
For all of my friends who have asked and are concerned for my absence, I’m sorry and miss you too. Thank you for noticing and asking that question. Don’t worry games are in my blood. I’ll be back. In the meantime follow along in my journey here.

Sincerely,
Crazmadsci

Update Quicklinks: Printing, Painting, Blog

Man this has been an absolutely crazy week! Beyond being absolutely emotionally exhausted, thinking I was about to move 800 miles to abruptly learning that a move isn’t required. Thank goodness my hobby time is such a relaxing and stress relieving activity for me. Don’t worry I’m not going anywhere and my printers are humming again!

Overall I’ve recently been struggling to find a balance with everything I want to do for the site along with documenting all my past, present, and future projects. How can I harmonize it all? What should I work in first? I’m almost too inspired and frustrated I cannot do it all. I legitimately rolled a dice today on what I was going to do to help pick an idea.

I’ve decided that my largest priority is to catch up on data gathered for my 3 active projects: Hold My Dwarf, Fantasy Props, and Monstrous Encounters. Fantasy props currently has the highest priority as I am attempting to get all the write ups completed. The largest hurdle for me is coming up with a system for my data collection that is easily read, manipulated and capable to look at months after printing. Due to this hurdle I’ve decided that I am no longer allowed to print in the current week without making sure all notes are updated and written for the last week. This is definitely going to slow down painting until I catch up on notes.

As for painting I’ve been moving slow as my stamina is not where I desire it per paint session along with a lack of confidence of how I should paint each thing. I am finding myself crippled with being overwhelmed of all the possibility but not enough muscle memory. Slowly but surely it will get better.

As for the blog itself, I really thing this is going to become something really special. I am definitely a major overachiever so attempting to not make a wall of text and something easier to read for someone at a glance is important. This is going to be something that I’ll need to improve on but will be largely dependent on the community and comments. So for the time being I’m going to continue to just build content.

It’s been a productive week and I’m really enjoying myself. This site along with my daily Instagram hobby streak is really motivating.

Below are pictures of things that I’ve done in the last week.

Printing Updates

This week was a bit slow on printing but I got a few things in. I have been printing a fun surprise building (shown on the left) from a recent Cast N’ Play Kickstarter. Still going to let it grow before I show it off. This thing is gigantic and is probably the largest building i’ve ever printed.

In the center you will see that I’ve been working on printing a bunch of tiny bits and pieces from the Fantasy Props kickstarter. These are labeled “isolated props” and allow you to create all sorts of things in the future. I am hoping to grow my collection of bits for my table.

On the Right is my last major file for the Fantasy Props kickstarter the tree. I still need to print the canopy but i’m getting close. Probably one of the tallest things i’ve printed on my Phrozen Sonic Mini 4K thus far.

Painting Update

Did not get to paint much but got some priming in for siege equipment (shown on left). There is a catapult and a battering ram to be painted!

I also spent a few nights painting and finishing my 2021 Benchmark Model. This model is one I will use to see my personal growth for the year. It contains several areas I hope to grow for the year. I’m going to make a post about it this week, stay tuned.

Blog Update

Just because I can’t help it. I got a shiny new battlemap! I am so excited as it will bring my prints alive such as this in progress castle from Printable Scenery.

This week I did not get a whole lot done for the site but a LOT of data work on the back end. New posts include a print log for Fantasy Prop’s Treasure.

I also took the time to do an extensive write up on Where can I find 3D models for printing in the tabletop space. Check them out!

Hoping to get a lot more writing done this week.

And of course don’t hesitate with questions, ideas, or suggestions. Thanks for reading.

Update Quicklinks: Printing, Painting, Blog

Another week has past and so has another week of work. Overall this week has been extremely productive but not in the usual ways. I have barely been printing and believe I printed only 4 columns for holding my organizational trays I built for scatter terrain. I have also not been painting as much as I would have liked.

However I have been organizing and packing like absolutely crazy. As it turns out my family is going to pick up and move about 800 miles for a new opportunity for us! It is incredibly exciting but overwhelming trying to organize and pack all the hobby things i’ve accumulated over the last few years. I want to make sure I stay organized once I get to the new place and be able to keep up my momentum. This needed to happen anyways so why not now.

Things i’ve organized include but are not limited to:

  • Sorting my entire box of miscellaneous pieces of 3d printed parts that have not been sorted
  • Created 6 more storage boxes with the correct labeling for storage of my dungeon tile collection.
  • Creating a double decker snap closed scatter terrain storage box.

I also finally started an Instagram to keep track of my daily hobby progress and hobbystreak! You can find me at @crazmadsci

Printing Updates

Overall I spent the week writing content and organizing and no printing of note happened.

I did assemble a catapult from Fantasy Props! Check it out. A full write up is to come.

Painting Update

I finally finished painting the giant purple worm from the Dragonlock Miniatures kickstarter mega project. This was my first attempt at glazing and I even went as far as attempt to deep dive into thinking about the theory and application of using an exploding base for the bottom of the miniature. I’ll have the post written up all about it very soon.

Blog Update

So far I am not meeting my 2021 Blog goals with number of posts and such and hope that the wrench of moving and having to get up and change states in 3 weeks isn’t going to ruin my momentum throughout the year.

However I did get to post 3 Print Logs for the Fantasy Props kickstarter I am working on. You can find them here:

State of the Crazy: Latest Update

It has been quite a long time since I wrote my last update for the website. 2020 was one hell of a year and I’m ready and excited to be into 2021. Towards the end of the year things became hectic as I finished a work contract and found out we were expecting another kiddo in June!

I have set some lofty goals for 2021 for my hobbying and the site. Lets get to the updates. Since it has been several months since the last update this will be a bit long but will provide hotlinks to the category that interests you.

Update Quicklinks: Printing, Painting, Blog

Printing Updates

However, I have been printing like crazy. Let’s break down the projects.

Fantasy Props Logo and Picture credit to STL Miniatures.

Fantasy Props:

I believe to be 95% printed with this project and will check quality and reprint as needed as I do write ups. I have already begun my massive project write up and will add new model print reports every weekday. Stay tuned for that! I’ve guessing that though over 2 kilograms of resin on this project alone.

There is so much to talk about and discuss with this project.

Monstrous Encounters logo and picture credit to Monstrous Encounters/Dungeon Works.

Monstrous Encounters

Monstrous encounters, is over halfway completed at this point but I have it currently paused the project in order to make sure I am focusing on getting everything sorted and documented for Fantasy Props. Progress will begin again shortly.

Hold my Dwarf image from kickstarter website.

Hold My Dwarf:

Hold my dwarf: I started this in November 2021 and decided to pause resin printing until the completion of the Fantasy Props.

I am currently planning on using one of he models as a painting benchmark for 2021.

Other Projects:

Printable Scenery Castle:

This is soo close to the completion of printing. It has been difficult to print namely due to assembling as I go rather than having a print list. Also due to the little on who loves to play with the pieces I’ve had to constantly take it apart and box it up. This is definitely a goal to finish printing by the end of the month so I can start painting it.

FDM Print Profile Comparison:
I’ve also been working on a few projects such as a print profile comparison of some of the most popular FDM cura profiles floating out there. I am aiming to have a write up set out soon.

Ruin Building set:
Lastly I’ve been printing the vuhelim ruins set which can be found on thingiverse for free and am trying to print ALL the pieces to decide the best combination of ruins. I’m also going to use this set as painting practice for the castle and a test of catalog formatting for the site.
Overall the printing has been strong now to up my painting game.

Painting Update

As for painting I’ve been significantly slower. I successfully painted a batch of skeletons from the Dragonlock kickstarter. I have done a deep dive into the painting of bone to help me figure out my preferred method for painting bone as well so the skeletons were applying what I learned.

I have also been going through my printed and unpainted box and finished up some tavern tiles by dungeonworks.

Last but not least I took my first stab at glazing and painted a purple worm from the Dragonlock Kickstarter. It is not 100% completed as I’m currently testing the base ideas. My aim is to make the base explode dirt out like the model just popped out of the Earth. I have a few bases in the testing stage and getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger and doing it on the main piece.

Blog Update

I am constantly playing around with my User experience and attempting to get the best clean and easy to navigate site I can. The primary focus at the moment is to improve the home page appeal and readability of printing logs. The formatting of the past tables are hard to read depending on the device and resolution so I’m attempting to make it better. Thank you for being patient as I work to improve it.

With that being said Weekly updates are now going to be on Mondays and Fridays are going to have a “major addition” to the site. This can include personal projects or information as a whole regarding an aspect of focus for the site.

With all that being said. A lot of work is happening and having a blast making this dream a reality.

2021 Hobby Goals!

I am not one for New Years Resolutions so instead i’m creating a list of 2021 Hobby goals. Since I know that the next year will inevitably come with a few curveballs as well as a few known changes such as a new addition to the family June 2021, I am unable to attempt to change my behavior every day of the year with a resolution. So instead I am setting goals for 2021 i’m going to break into 3 categories: Painting, Printing and the Blog along with a final Other bucket. Below are the goals for 2021 in each category. This is definitely a list which will take time to focus on but I think it is absolutely accomplishable.

Painting

  • Paint an average of 4 days a week
  • Have greater than 183 hobby days (more days than not)
  • Create 12 different bases for miniatures
  • Paint to completion at least 24 models (regardless of size)
  • 4 deep dives to paint techniques or methods/recipes of painting

Painting can include modeling, terrain crafting, basing etc. I have some very doable goals for this category as I believe it to be my weakest of all 3. Overall my painting is my least confident area and I am slow to complete models due to needing significantly more knowledge and practice in the area. I also am counting hobby days instead of a hobby streak due to the incoming baby. Knowing that I cannot continue a streak in the hospital and with a newborn i’m instead focusing on total hobby days for the year and will attempt to always beat previous hobby streaks. For the deep dives to paint techniques I am going to attempt to grow my skill in a technique or practice as many different methods people paint things such as bone. By practicing different ways others achieve a goal perhaps i’ll discover my own preferred system or different ways to accomplish things. I am not counting terrain as completion for models but do end up painting terrain and scatter quite a bit, perhaps more than miniatures which I should fix.

3D Printing

  • 6 mega projects completed
  • In-depth study of supports for FDM
  • Learn how to support resin
  • Inventory 3D printing/tabletop collection
  • Develop a deeper understanding of print settings

3D printing is my largest strength for several of these goals I’m already well on the way of completing. The largest difficulty will be to document, photograph and write up my work onto the blog to document my progress. As a way to mitigate that I am starting a rule that I cannot start printing for that work week without writing up what I’ve printed the last week.  The largest area of weakness is the mentality, strategy and settings for for supports for FDM and resin printing. The 6 “mega projects” will consist of either 100% printing of a kickstarter or a large scale ambitious project. These projects I’m definitely super excited about but not limited to.

Blog

  • Weekly update write ups (Mondays)
  • Weekly Page addition to site (Fridays)
  • Complete Digital Catalog of what I have made
  • Complete Beginners write ups to 3D printing
  • Get 25 Followers to Blog

The Blog will keep me honest about my goals. With the mentality to create a historical and educational location of my projects, this will hopefully be a great place to see my personal growth and one day help others with their own goals and projects. At least perhaps inspiration. The largest thing I need to focus on is my weekly write ups and additions. I must be consistent in this and this will be without a doubt the most time sensitive of the entire collection of my annual goals. The weekly updates will be blog posts and page additions to provide depth to the site. Every weekday I am hoping to add bits of my projects such as printed sets and later link to a “Mega Project” page upon completion. The page additions will contain information that are more indepth such as learning write ups, introductions to the hobby etc. This will have more of a universal application and not time sensitive so will be located on a page on the site. The goal of the blog this year is to also improve navigation, usability and user experience.

Other

  • Improve photographing of projects/miniatures
  • Try 2 new tabletop top games
  • Monster Cards for each monster in collection
  • Read/Listen to 5 books
  • Play a video game to completion

Last but not least is my Other category. These things can relate to my hobbying but are not restricted to it. Overall I would like to improve photographing my miniatures and terrain as well as learn more about what goes into taking better miniature photographs. Also I desire to branch out and grow in more games and interests. I know for certain that Frostgrave is a game I intend to try as I have the book but have yet to play it.  Perhaps i’ll branch out into wargames or sci-fi, who knows, but i’m excited about the future. Also of course my imagination is also fueled by some of my other favorite mediums books and video games, can’t forget some of those.

Overall 2021 is already looking like a full year but by chipping away at it. I believe that I can reach my goals. Follow along and find out.

Great Dragon & Eggs Dragonlock Miniatures

Dragon Miniature Print Data
Saving the most anticipated piece for last. This dragon is massive and has a base of 5 inches in diameter (12.7 centimeters) estimated a 10 inch total wingspan (25.4 centimers) and length of close around 11 inches (27.94 centimeters). As the featured piece for the Dragonlock Miniatures Kickstarter I thought it would be only fitting for using this print project as the finale of my individual posts. As of this post I have officially completed and printed every model from the Fat Dragon Games/ Dragonlock Miniatures Kickstarter, i’m so pumped. Stay tuned for the overall breakdown post. I am also pumped because you can never have too many dragons right?

This Great Dragon overall printed really well and has a ton of texturing on the skin of the model. This will overall paint nicely. I had some consistent themed issues in retraction and overhangs. Yeah yeah I need to dial those in ASAP, after my next 2? projects i’m already working on for my FDM printer i’ll recalibrate and tune up the print profiles. Stay tuned for some write ups on that process. In terms of detail there is even ribbing along the eyes of the model! This is by far the most detailed sculpt of the entire collection by far. My largest complaint about the model is that the assembly of the model does leave some more sizable gaps I will have to do some post processing to clean it up. I almost wish there were holes in the wings and body to use magnets for easier storage since the wing span makes it take up so much space. Perhaps i’ll drill into it and get some magnets. I struggled to glue the wing tips on and used green stuff to help in that process. I really should get some accelerant for my super glue.

In conclusion this was a blast to make and see this creature come alive. This is by far the largest monster I have made on my printer. Be sure to read below on my comments on the individual components that make up the model and like always a link to the files to purchase from the Fat Dragon Games website is listed below.

Dragon_Wing_Tips35 min1.1g Printed three times, I kept dropping tips and couldn’t find the tiny piecesPrinted several times extra. I kept loosing wing tips while attaching and couldn’t be found so just printed some more. Man this is why I love the power of 3d printing.
Dragon_Wing_Left15 hr 3 min40.6gSome retraction issues on the underside of the wing. Will have to sand and buff up the wings but that is ok. Most issues are along the ribbing of the wings.
Dragon_Wing_Right14 hr 42 min39.4gMore retraction issues than left wing which is strange that the behavior is different per wing but using the same settings.
Dragon_Tail2 hr 17 min5.2gCame out well some small filament build up showing in wings but easy fix and will probably give the wings a more realistic appearance.
Horns1 hr 3 min2.4gCame out well and attached well to the dragon. Probably one of the best fits on the entire model.
Dragon_Neck2 hr 45 min9.5gOverhang issues visible on spikes on the top of the neck. Large gap between head and neck. Attempted to use green stuff to fill in the gap.
Dragon Head2 hr 32 min7gProbably the best success in the entire print the head looks great even the teeth and tongue. My only complaint is some overhang issues on the top of the head due to the orientation of the print.
Dragon_Body1d 4 hr 20 min99gBody came out really really well as well. Some small overhang issues along the butt of the model and underside but most wont see it.
Dragon_Eggs3 hr 22 min11gPrint went well very simple. Layer lines show pretty badly

Giant Worm

Giant Worm Dragonlock Miniatures

Giant Worm Miniature Print Data

Looking for an absolute classic? You can’t go wrong with this gargantuan creature. Yes you heard me gargantuan. The base of this model is 4 inches (10.16 cm) in diameter with a height of just around 6 inches (16.24 cm). This is by far one of the largest miniatures I have made to date and owned. While there are several different types of massive worms to fight in Dungeons and Dragons the most common is the Purple Worm of which I am planning to paint it as. Well I actually am currently actively painting it and it is sitting on my table next to me while writing this.

This purple worm is an interesting model to be sure. There are several highlights about the design of this sculpt and several in my mind downfalls.

The Good: I really love how this model really fits together. The piece prints in 5 parts of decreasing size as you move up the model which essentially hug the body making a nice clean fit until the head which is a flat cut and uses pins to attach. The way the model is cut and built provides a natural curvature to the sculpt. The print is relatively easy to print although I did have one failure on the bottom piece of which it lost print adhesion. Thankfully it was almost done and I am able to hide the error with some green stuff to secure the bottom in place. The spine of the model was also easy to print and I noticed very little retraction issues along its spine.

The Bad: My singular most largest complaint is that the worm itself does not fit securely into the base of this model. As one of the few models in the entire collection that have the base separated from the monster completely it is obviously a weaker point in the sculpting strategy. The fit is not secure or snug and will require dirt or some kind of basing material to fill in the gap. I originally secured it with green stuff but will fill it in once I get more of the painting completed. A personal pet peeve is that I struggle with the orientation of this print. As you can see in the photograph the model consists of plates and scales along the model. The scaled portion typically in most lore descriptions and graphical images from fantasy genre use it as its belly. However the scaled portion on the model is too the side and not the underside which makes it a pose difficult (in my beginner mind) to paint. I am going to attempt to simulate a whale jumping out of water with its belly to the side. Hopefully my basing will help share that story.

Overall this model is one of my favorites for sure the only question next is… How the heck am I going to store it?

Worm Peg 5 minPrinted Twice
Worm_A4 hr 15 min20gPrint failed right at the end. This was devastating as I was so excited about the print. Turns out however that it is the bottom most piece of the worm and I can hide it, so I never reprinted the piece.
Worm_B3 hr 28 min11gMost obvious seam between A and B when gluing.
Worm_C2 hr 54 min9g
Worm_D2 hr 26 min7gTwo pegs go between D and E to help attach the head. Which was a nice touch since the cut was smooth
Worm_E2 hr 52 min8gMost obvious seam between D and E when gluing, this was a flat surface and did not fold into the model like the rest of the pieces
Worm_base10 hr 35 min40gThe hole for the worm is much too big and did not feel like it fit as neatly as many other models. I will have to fill in the gap with basing material after finish painting.

Kobold Warriors

Kobold Warriors Dragonlock Miniatures

Kobold Miniature Print Data

Kobolds as creatures are a monster in dungeons and dragons that really deserve a novel to be written about them, but alas I am not a subject matter expert nor do I have the time. These creatures have evolved greatly over the last several editions of Dungeons and Dragons so much so they have shifted from being classified the same as goblinoids to being of dragon decent in more recent editions of Dungeons and Dragons.
These small creatures are vastly misunderstood and overall for these models I believe that to be the same.

Although I am supportive of having models that fit the size category in height for models I have found that this little guys are incredibly difficult to find and easy to loose due to their tiny size. I will most likely rebase these models to a larger size since they will still occupy a standard 1″ square grid. As for the models themselves I think they printed well but am disappointed there is not more of a variety in their poses and weapon choices. These models were easy to print which is an added bonus. These guys print quickly and can easily make more for larger battles the day of a session. Very little issues occurred with printing these models.

Overall no one can go wrong by adding more kobolds to your collection. Almost every campaign I’ve ever played has started with a kobold fight or character. Meepo i’m thinking about you from the Sunless Citadel. You will always be one of the most misunderstood NPCs i’ve ever traveled with.

Trash Beast Dragonlock Miniatures

Trash Beast Miniature Print Data

The Trash Beast is above and beyond the most difficult miniature to print. I do not know what it was about one of its tentacles but I would always fail. I believe I attempted the piece above its eye approximately 4 to 5 times before I had good enough adhesion, didn’t run out of filament or some other strange reason I couldn’t track down. Finally a big enough brim, better adhesion, as well as a new nozzle finally game me the success I need.
For the trash beast itself also commonly known as an Otyugh in Dungeon and Dragons is another creature that has existed in all 5 editions of dungeons and dragons and yet I have never encountered the. This is a shame of course because these intelligent creatures can even speak in common. Perhaps one day my band of adventurers will encounter this beast.
As for the print quality the print itself looks good, some retraction improvement along the tentacles and very obvious “mold lines” on the model where the pieces reattached. The one benefit of this model is how easily it was to attach the pieces to glue this guy together. Perhaps I shall use this model to try to improve my sculpting skills?

TrashBeast_C1:58:005.2gThis piece was the most difficult piece to print in the entire collection of Dragonlock miniatures so far. I do not know why it was so difficult but I finally got it done and attached.

Hill Giant Dragonlock Miniatures

Hill Giant Miniature Print Data
This print, I will admit is my absolute least favorite of the entire Dragonlock collection. I have personally struggled with how I was going to write about his model. I have decided to speak the truth regardless of the praise or criticism so my readers will know what kind of models they would be getting or if issues are just user error.

Update: January 6, 2021. This file has been updated by Fat Dragon Games and given more detail. Print below represents first version.

Overall as you can see from the image not all pieces of the model are shown on the figure. The club is not glued on and the shield. However I decided to leave those pieces out in order to display and better describe my points. As you can see on the model there are several obvious locations where pieces were attached on the model, most notably the downward hand and the waist. These pieces were straight cuts for convivence of printing as they fit directly onto the build plate but due to this there is no assistance for gluing the model together. This makes the lines of the model obvious and can make the glue job sloppy. This is probably the worst fit for assembly of the entire collection of the 2019 miniature line. The club however does have a small hole (seen by the pointy bit on the handle) of which to join it. This however was much too small for the size of the club.

There are of course issues with the print that are my own such as obvious layer lines displaying telling me I have a loose belt or vibration issues. However overall compared to the other models this sculpt seems rushed. I even looked back on the kickstarter itself and see that there was only concept art of this model upon the launch of the kickstarter and was pretty far down the list of models to unlock. Perhaps this was one of the last they sculpted and wanted to just finish? Either way I will use this model for paint practice but unfortunately I doubt i’ll put it on my table. I wish there was more detail on the model especially the torso. So many giants can look incredible and you can really add the detail on FDM prints due to its size making it easier to print.

This is a lesson learned and is needed to 100% print the complete collection of the kickstarter.

Giant Shield7 min1gWas very confused that this piece was used as a belt for the model. The shield was very tiny and did not feel like it belonged.
Giant Club38 min1gClub (not show on image) came out well but had a tiny pyramid shaped form fit to attach to the handle. This was incredibly difficult to attempt to attach and I ended up giving up on it honestly.
Giant Hand21 min1gincredibly difficult to glue to the body. Struggled to get muscle orientation just right. Fit was a straight cut with no attachment
Giant Torso1 hr 51 min6gSupport under elbow made a slight hole in the arm. Overall I could visually see vibrational issues with my machine as there are more obvious layerlines. Fit and form with all additions to model were difficult and did not appear to fit well.
Giant_Legs4 hr 36 min12gTorso came out well to the model but again like the rest of the pieces the fit to the torso was not smooth and there is an obvious line where gluing occurred.
