Minotaur Dragonlock Miniatures

Minotaur Miniature Print Data

Minotaurs, are a monster type that I have very little experience playing against but the overall art style seems consistent with the more classic monster look. These are not some of my favorite of the Fat Dragon Collection of models but overall came out well. I am exited to paint these models because I think they would be perfect examples to practice painting muscle groups as their arms and back is a great place to practice.

Update: January 6, 2021. This file has been updated by Fat Dragon Games where axes are easier to print. Print below represents first version

As for my feedback on the models… Overall the models came out well but my largest frustration is imagining how to paint each model. The issues I see is that the loincloth is going to be incredibly difficult to paint due to the small gap for the front and back and getting a brush into the area between the legs. This is definitely a downside of printing “supportless” models as the cloth is going all the way to the base and is used for built in structural support. The gap to paint the front and back of each cloth piece is definitely going to be frustrating but time will tell. Also based on how the weapons were removed from supports caused holes on the tips that required some green stuff to clean up or glue. There is also a nit picky issue I have with these models because the base is a nonstandard size of between 25mm and 50mm in size. Normally this is not an issue for most but due to how I store miniatures the basing is problematic.

Minotaur_Warrior4 hr 4 min10gUsed greenstuff at bottom of spear to attach and hold spear. Gluing weapons on I cannot see seams anymore of where they were located. Retraction on spear, weapon and horns.
Minotaur Warrior weapons1 hr 7 min2gTip of spear is really melty and should be improved.
Minotaur__A4 hr 3 min10gHand and weapon added well. Some retraction issues seen on back of hand and horns. Bottom of axe has some holes based on how support was removed.
Minotaur A weapon and Hand49 min2g*see above notes
Minotaur__B3 hr 26 min9gHorn chipped but seems to work. The top of the spear had some visual holes so I used greenstuff to try to smooth it out.
Minotaur_ C Dead4 hr 35 min13gCame out well. Of course more layer lines visible.

Owlbears Dragonlock Miniatures

Owlbear Miniature Print Data

I will not lie that these models are some of my favorite. The feather detail on these models are absolutely fantastic. My least favorite piece would be the chest of the owlbear and the fur texture but the feathers on the wings are stunning and some of the best detail i’ve seen on my FDM printer. I am of course biased because owlbears are my absolute favorite monsters in all of D&D. I believe them to be misunderstood and the legends of their creation as an “accident” of magical experimentation. If there is ever a situation to put an owlbear on my table I jump on it. So excited. Also these are some of the cutest and to scale baby owlbears i’ve seen to date! A big lore piece of owlbears is the parent protecting their den and this would be perfect to put my players in a moral dilemma if encountering these young-ins.

Owlbear Body6 hr 34 min15gHead fit very well within the model. Wings do have gapping when glued to the model. It appears that the slot for the wings are bigger than that of the wings itself. I glued wings closest to the hands so slot would be in owlbear’s armpits. Some very slight retraction issues between the finger tips. Feathers came out in great detail.
Owlbear Head43 min2g
Owlbear Right Wing40 min1g
Owlbear Left Wing41 min1g
Owlbear Baby 11hr 4 min2gReally no complaints for me about these guys. They look great one of the best playable baby owlbears on the market!
Owlbear Baby 21hr 7m2hI second the statement as the one above. These babies look fantastic.

Goblin Dragonlock Miniatures

Goblin Miniature Print Data

Is there every such a thing of too many goblins? These goblins remind me of some of the original goblin artistic styles for Dungeons and Dragons. Much like the Fat Dragon Game art style this classic look is a solid consistent characteristic of their brand in my opinion. One highlight is that these goblins do stand shorter than other standard models which I personally love as an aesthetic to match the size of a goblin. With a decent variety between armored, weapon type, hoods, helmets, etc. This goblin collection can hit many of your needs in a go to dungeons and dragons starter goblin set.

Goblin_01_Spear1hr 12 min2gtip of spear was a bit melty. Added minimum layer height time after this print to be 10 seconds
Goblin_02_Flail1hr 26 min3goverall pretty happy with print could possibly improve print underside (briding?) to investigate further.
Goblin_03_Axe1 hr 24 min3gooops accidently used supports and skirt instead of brim. Not the easiest to clean up with default cura settings.
Goblin_04_Armor Mace1 hr 14 min3gAnother nicely printed model. Great brim! Pre-Support was tough to remove and required cutting. Be careful
Goblin_05_Armor Polearm1hr 9 min3gMelty spear tip, some stringing between horns
Goblin_06_Armor Bow1hr 30 min3gRetraction issues again on bow to body. Support on arm was great to remove. Brim shows seriously low 1st layer issues. Be careful with the bow and filing it… oops
Goblin_7_Spear1hr 26 min3gOops accidental supports again…
Goblin_8_Polearm1hr 13min2gTip of polearm is a little bit melty. Should work on minimum layer print time.
Goblin_9_Dead1 hr 8min3goverall decent print. My largest complaint is that the base is wider than 1″ or 25.4cm making it take up too much space if used on a game board.
Goblin_10_Spear1 hr 13min2gSpear again a bit melty. Retraction issues on ears and will need a bit of sanding. Really like the boots that look to big for him.
Goblin_11 Spear1h 12min2gSome small overhang issues on the left & right elbow. Overall not too bad.

Skeletons Dragonlock Miniatures

Because everyone needs more skeletons in their life. Seriously though, Skeletons are probably the largest collection of monster in my miniature collection and although I do not necessarily need more I vowed to print all Fat Dragon Game Models! You can never have too many though. Who knows when you are going to fight a necromancer who will raise an army, or marry a man who dreams of necromancy player characters….

Skeleton_04_Polearm1 hr 19 min3gNot terrible. I really need to work on the melty top bits though with filament cooling. (Future project suggestion)
Skeleton_05_Armor_sword1 hr 8 min2gSword tip above shield is common to break. I had to glue back together after craft table bumping.
Skeleton_06_Bow1 hr 30 min3gPrinted a few of these. Bow above hand is common to break and I straight up lost one after the battle royale
Skelton_07_sword*Group PrintGroup print realized I should have turned on retraction
Skeleton_08_Kneeling Bow*Group PrintI actually printed this one twice. I can’t seem to find the last one. Definitely an interesting print of using a robe/cape to hold up the model for supportless printing.
Skeleton_09_buried*Group PrintSuper cute model. I am really in love with it. One of my favorites.
Skeleton_10_Sword*1h33m*3gThe “classic” sword and shield model. Definitely some retraction issues inside the cape.

Skeleton_11_Spear B39m1gspear that body holds. Spear is a bit melty as to how it printed.
Skeleton_11_Spear_C*37m*1.5Body Piece. Legs fit reasonably enough. Hands also fit well.

Skeleton_13_Crawling*1h11m*3gCute model but its legs look a bit funny.

Snake Warriors Dragonlock Miniatures

This category i’m really excited to share. I have yet to have real snake warriors or in Wizards of the Coast lore Yuan-Ti. When it comes to lore of snake like or reptilian creatures in D&D and other such games. I see and experience them rarely. I think this would be a great time to research them more before I print them.

I really love that there are 3 weapon varieties the bow, sword & shield and standard spear. On the spear and sword minis I really love the emblem on their chests which really tie these models together. The print quality of their scales on their backs is crisp and incredible. My only real complaint is that the bases for these models are non standard large minis with bases larger than 25mm but smaller than 50mm.

Tentacle Dragonlock Miniatures

Of all the things in D&D gameplay that could terrify me the most, it would be a large tentacle coming out of no where, grabbing my character and pulling me into the abyss. Today’s featured print project you guessed it, is tentacles. These models are incredibly sculpted so much so you can even see the printed wrinkles on the skin of the tentacle themselves. These are some of the cleanest print sets of the entire Fat Dragon Game collection. There is of course some room for improvement, like always regarding retraction. I’m going to nail it soon! The only downside is that these models are HUGE! These models in particular are inspiring me to write up something regarding scale creep and playable scale. These organic looking bases for these tentacles are greater than 25mm and will take up a classification of a large monster. I decided to attempt to shrink one of the tentacles to what I think is more accurate to playable scale and you can definitely tell what a difference it made. While they look incredible i’m curious as to how i’m going to use them on the table. At least they are the perfect pieces to practice fun painting for aquatic creatures!

Ogre Dragonlock Miniatures

These humanoid creatures have been written time and time again throughout history. Either from mythology, your fantasy book series or tabletop game. With such a wide variety of depictions and story telling it is easy to find a style you like. These Ogres give me many feelings towards towards an order D&D artistic style or of World of Warcraft . With big front tusks, bald heads and pointed ears these are for sure going to be unique on your table.

Orc Warriors Dragonlock Miniatures

These proud and misunderstood humanoids are the next featured print project. Overall it was a learning experience on coming back to printing after my long break with baby. After these prints I ended up deep diving into printer maintenance and calibration through the end of July and early August. Nevertheless I came out with good minis.

Orc Warrior 06 Spear1h34min3.7gClean simple model, also printed well.
Dead Orc1h 9min3glayer lines show on top of body

These orcs were printed as a group print with the Skeletons 3 group. Overall I realized how rusty my printer was. There were obvious 1st layer issues making brim removal hard, retraction issues, and the separate weapons needed to be added to these miniatures were sloppy so I reprinted them. This was definitely a wake up call that I needed to undo the cobwebs and work on my retraction settings and calibration methods.

Overall the weapons were incredibly difficult to print and took several attempts. Thank goodness that they were 0.5 to 1g of filament a piece and were quick and easily affordable. I had the most success when printing the weapons in groups and printed slowly with larger minimal layer times around 15s.

Goblinoid Dragonlock Miniatures

What is a Goblinoid anyway? I thought goblinoid is in referring to the humanoid collection of goblins. So i guess these Goblinoids could be Goblins, Hobgoblins or bugbears? I’m probably going to paint these fellas like hobgoblins because I don’t have many to in that collection. As the big cousins of goblins these little dudes are more militant and will be perfect. I really love the capes on the back of these guys and they might start being my practice for layering on capes. I’m honestly really looking forward to painting them.
